English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Reading, writing, listening to and speaking English. Skills are acquired though classroom tuition, pair and group activity, project work. At each level a class will complete a group of three SQA ESOL Units designated for that level: Everyday Communication, Transactional Contexts and Work and Study Related Contexts and, in addition, a group of four SQA units comprising Contemporary Issues, Working with Others, Local Investigations and Employability together with English for Vocational Purposes, Business English and Academic English. IT skills are developed in weekly IT sessions. Students may also enter for an optional Cambridge examination at an appropriate point during the year.

Students develop the foundation skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking English, plus a range of options at their level. Skills are acquired and practised through classroom tuition, pair and group activity, and project work. A range of programmes are offered as follows: Access 3 (Beginners and Elementary); Intermediate 1 (Pre-Intermediate); Intermediate 2 (Intermediate); Higher (Upper Intermediate and Advanced).

Entry Requirements
All applicants should be literate in their mother tongue and can enter at any level. Prior to entry onto the course, all applicants are assessed and placed in classes according to their level of English.

This course is designed for speakers of other languages who wish to learn or improve their English.

Assessment
There is an internal exams for this course.

Progression / Career Opportunities
Students successfully completing this course may progress to other courses in Anderson Ross Business School, at university or into employment. Alternatively, students may continue to study English at the next level of study.

Students may choose to follow an English Plus option which combines general English with business or academic English.
